DEPARTMENT OF GEOLOGY

FACULTY OF APPLIED SCIENCES AND TECHNOLOGY

HISTORY / PHILOSOPHY

The Department of Geology and Mining started alongside the take off of the faculty in October 2011. The first set of students in the department are currently in the final year in the 2014/2015 session.

Abundant solid mineral deposits abound in Niger State. Sedimentary rocks of the Bida Basin, of which 80% of its areal and stratigraphic extent lie in Niger State, have been reported to host possible occurrence of commercial hydrocarbon deposit. The establishment of the Department of Geology and Mining was therefore very appropriate and was meant to match words with actions by the administrators of the University. The Department has since become the nerve centre of the university's research efforts and capacity building initiative for the harnessing and development of the state's solid mineral and oil and gas resources meant to diversify the economy as well as to ensure rapid economic growth and social transformation through employment generation and poverty reduction. The Department has since engaged itself in hydrocarbon exploration research of the Bida Basin as well as in evaluating the solid mineral resources of the state and has on several occasions presented the results of the evaluation to the State Government, the University community and the general public.
