DEPARTMENT OF HUMAN KINETICS AND HEALTH EDUCATION

FACULTY OF EDUCATION AND ARTS

HISTORY / PHILOSOPHY

The increased interest in sports, general fitness, trimmed body and the general desire for feeling good necessitated the training of exercise and fitness scientists who can adequately give people the desired outcome in their exercise programmes. Sports and fitness programmes have gone so scientific that the relevance of exercise physiologists, Cardio respiratory Rehabilitation Specialists, Health Educators, Athletic trainers, Occupational therapists and Sports nutritionists, cannot be overemphasised. This group of Specialists are grossly lacking in Nigeria. The Human Kinetics and Health Education programme is designed to fill this gap. Equally important is the need to produce competent teachers who could impart this knowledge and skill to students at various levels.

The programme was initiated by Prof. M. A. Chado who was also the pioneer Vice - Chancellor of the University. Prof. Amina Kaidal later became the Head of Department and together with Prof. M. A. Chado, produced the first curriculum for Exercise and Sports Science, then in the Faculty of Applied and Natural Sciences. After careful assessment, the department was renamed "Sports Science and Health Education". This necessitated the transfer of the programme to the Faculty of Education and Arts. When Dr Mohammed Saba Mohammed assumed office as the Head of Department in 2010, the need to further review the curriculum was identified and this need gave birth to this new curriculum which came into use in the 2011/2012 academic session. This continued till recently, and specifically on Wednesday, 17th June, 2015 when the Senate approved the reverting of the Nomenclature from Sport Science and Health Education to Human Kinetics and Health Education (KHE) in compliance to the directive of the National Universities Commission (NUC) directives that the University reverts the programme nomenclature to Human Kinetics and Health Education to be in line with the NUC Bench Mark( BMAS).
