IBBU Partners Raw Materials Council on Shea Value Chain and Sugar Beets Research

The Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University (IBBU) and the Raw Materials Research and Development Council (RMRDC) have commenced consultations on proposed joint research projects on Shea value chain and Sugar beets domestication. The Vice Chancellor of IBBU, Prof Muhammad Nasir Maiturare, accompanied by a team of researchers from the university met with the Director General of RMRDC, Prof Hussaini Doko Ibrahim, represented by the Director of Planning, Mrs Hajara Tanko for Shea and Dr. S. R. Mikailu for Sugar beets on the 18th July 2019 to discuss modalities for the joint research and the most appropriate methodologies to be adopted. The Shea value chain research which will be technically coordinated by the Head of Biology Department of IBBU, Dr (Mrs) Naomi John Dadi-Mamud will work on production of juice from Shea fruit pulps as well on the production of organic fertilizer from Shea waste products as a means of waste management and guaranteeing food security. The sugar beets domestication project will be technically coordinated at IBBU by Dr A. S. I. Gudugi of the Faculty of Agriculture. The DG of RMRDC expressed optimism that the research projects will lead to patentable results and innovative end products, particularly as Shea juice are not known to be presently available. To produce consumable Shea juice will need thorough research in compositional and toxicological analyses. The Vice Chancellor was accompanied to the meeting by the Director of University Research, Prof Nuhu Obaje, Director of Academic Planning, Dr Mohammed Aliyu Paiko, Director of Consultancy Services, Alhaji Sulaiman Liman as well as the two technical coordinators.
