The Niger State Ministry of Transport has renewed its determination to strengthen partnership arrangements with Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai towards providing requisite training for relevant transport operators in the State.
This was made known by the State Commissioner for Transport, Hajiya Ramatu Mohammed Yar’adua while receiving the Management team of the University led by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Abu Kasim Adamu in her office.
She said that the Ministry would find it more convenient to provide relevant services in terms of human capacity development and transport management with the presence of Institute of Maritime Studies and Department of Transport Management at the State owned university.
The Commissioner also pointed out that the administration of Governor Abubakar Sani Bello was keen to making sure that the immediate take-off of Baro Port remains one of the signature projects of his administration in view of its critical roles to facilitate transportation of cargoes to Northern parts of the country.
Hajiya Yar’adua commended the University for vigorously pursuing critical research projects, particularly those on hydrocarbon prospectivity of Bida basin and Seroprevalence on COVID-19 that would boost socio-economic activities of the State and country in general.
She assured of looking into issues presented by the Management on request for more buses to ease intra and inter- transportation of students and other members of the University community with a view to giving it necessary attention.
Earlier in his remarks, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Abu Kasim Adamu stated that the Management was at the Ministry as a follow-up to the earlier collaboration arrangements; especially on the proposal to provide training for all cadres of staff of the Ministry and boat operators on the State surface water bodies, among others.
He stressed the need for the University and State Ministry of Transport to continue to engage robustly with the aim of initiating capacity development programmes for Nigerlites so as to make them obtain relevant trainings that would give them employment opportunities to be provided by upcoming Baro Port.
Professor Adamu while appreciating the kind reception of his team, also appealed for special consideration of more buses to university in order to facilitate the intra and inter transportation of both students and members of the university community.
He applauded the efforts of the Commissioner for taking bold steps towards repositioning the Ministry of Transport.
In his vote of thanks, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Dr. Abdullahi Imam expressed appreciation with the visit of the University Management and pledged for a sustained mutual working relationship.
