PROFESSOR BAMIRO PROFFERS REQUIREMENTS FOR A WORLD-CLASS UNIVERSITY

A don and Former Vice-Chancellor, University of Ibadan, Professor Olufemi Bamiro has stipulated some basic conditions to be met by any university striving to become a world-class citadel of learning.
He stated this while delivering his paper as the 2nd Combined Convocation Lecturer of Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University on: “State University Funding in a Depressed Economy – Implications for Global Competitiveness” at the Institution’s Auditorium.
Professor Bamiro explained that except a university has rich quality staff, demonstrates excellence in research outputs and also have high levels of government and non-government sources of funding, it would be a mirage for such university to be ranked a world-class.
Other factors, the former Vice-Chancellor identified were high levels of government and non-government sources of funding, international and highly talented students, academic freedom, well defined autonomous governance structures and well equipped facilities for teaching, research, administration and student life.
He also added that universities aiming at becoming a world-class must ensure that their activities and result of research findings gain international reputation and must also contribute to their societies.
Professor Bamiro lauded the founding fathers of IBB University for laying a solid foundation and successive administrations in the University for conscientiously pursuing the realisation of Vision and Mission of the Institution; urging them to always works towards excellence.
The Visitor and Executive Governor of Niger State, Alhaji (Dr.) Abubakar Sani Bello speaking at the occasion reiterated his administration’s commitment to give the necessary support to the University so as to enable her competes favourably with its peers world-wide.


The Governor who was represented by his Deputy, Alhaji Ahmed Mohammed Ketso disclosed that everything was being done to ensure that development of education tops his administration’s priority list and called for a collaborative support from the relevant stakeholders in the sector towards providing quality education for the citizenry.
