RAW MATERIALS RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT COUNCIL DONATES CASHEW NUT SHELL LIQUID (CNSL) PROCESSING PLANT TO IBBU

The Raw Materials Research and Development Council (RMEDC) has donated a Cashew Nut Shell Liquid (CNSL) processing plant to the Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University Lapai (IBBUL) in order to facilitate entrepreneurship development; enhance engineering capability of students in terms of equipment design and fabrication as well as strengthening the cashew value chain as a means of promoting import substitution and competitiveness in the subsector.

The letter announcing of the donation signed by the Director General of RMRDC, Dr. Hussaini Doko Ibrahim indicated that the Council concerned about the high volume of cashew nut shell produced by the entirety of cashew factories located across the country, the RMRDC gave consideration to the establishment of CNSL production equipment in all the geopolitical zones of the country, hence the chose of IBB University for the establishment of the plant to represent the North-Central Zone.

This he said, was for the purpose of promoting research in products development of the CNSL in priority areas of paint, laminating resins, rubber compounding resins, cashew cements, polyurethane based polymers, surfactant, epoxy resins, friction linings and foundry chemicals production, etc.

Dr. Ibrahim pointed out that the Raw Materials Research and Development Council, a parastatal in the Federal Ministry of Science and Technology has over the years embarked on the development of some commodities to serve as industrial input in order to promote diversification of the economy from oil to non-oil.

He explained that the production of cashew nut and its derivatives, particularly the CNSL, would be of utmost consideration and benefits to the State and country at large.

The university will enter into a Memorandum of Agreement with the RMRDC on research and development programs and support on the entire cashew value chain utilizing the CNSL equipment.

Pursuant to the above, the Council had established a similar cashew nut production factories in Kogi State University (KSU) Ayingba and Federal University of Agriculture Abeokuta to boost the entrepreneurial activities in the country.
