Agricultural Science Education

Philosophy Of the Programme

The philosophy of the Agricultural Science Education Programme is a commitment to producing high quality and professionally competent graduate teachers trained with adequate skills, new orientation and knowledge to meet global best practices in education.

Mission and Vision Of the Programme

The programme shall be known for excellence in teacher education that harnesses the capabilities and capacities of student teachers through new orientation on productivity, service, and self reliance for effective utilization in school settings and the larger society. Hence, students would be provided with an enabling, friendly, conducive and encouraging environment for quality training and skills development in a variety of relevant educational activities for self, state and national development.

Objectives

The objectives of the BSc Ed Agricultural Science programme are derivable from the objectives ofTeaeher Education as contained in National Policy on Education (2004) as follows:

(i) To encourage the spirit of enquiry and creativity in students as prospective Agricultural science teachers.

(ii) To provide training through the study of science and science education that will help produce Agricultural science teachers who will fit into the social life of the community and society at large and to enhance their commitments to national objectives.

(iii) To provide pre-serviee and in-service Agric science teachers the intellectual and professional background adequate for their assignments and to make them adaptable to any changing situations

(iv)To build the pre-service and in-service Agric science teachers commitment to the teaching profession.

Specifically, the B.Ed Agricultural Science programmes of IBB University will enable students who have successfully completed the programme acquire the following;

  1. advanced knowledge of the subject matter of the Agric science discipline
  2. Sound knowledge of the pedagogical content knowledge and competences for effective instructional practices and quality learning outcomes.
  3. Professional skills and abilities for performing the different roles and lbnctions of Agricultural science teacher in schools and in the larger society.
  4. Confidence and commitment to Agric science teaching and teaching profession.
  5. Adequate background knowledge for higher studies in various aspect of science education.
  6. Knowledge, skills and competencies to teach Agricultural science at secondary and college of education level.

Admission Requirement

The general requirement for admission into any of the B. Sc Ed Science education Agric Science programmes of the department is for candidates to satisfy the IBB University Minimum entry qualifications which stipulates 5 CREDITS which must include English Language and Mathematics in GCE/SSCE ‘0’ Level NECO/WAEC in not more than two sittings.

Biology Education Programme

Graduates of the programme would be endowed with academic and professional competencies, attitudes and values needed for quantitative, qualitative, effective and productive teaching in schools and perform well in other fields.

Objectives

The objectives of the B. Sc. Ed Biology programme are imbibed in the objectives of Teacher Education as contained in National Policy on Education (2004) as follows:

(ii) To provide training through the study of science and science education that will help produce biology teachers who will fit into the social life of the community and society at large and to enhance their commitments to national objectives.

Programme contents

B.Sc (Ed) Biology

4 Year Degree programme through UME: Candidates must have 5 ‘0’ level credits. These should include English Language. Mathematics, Biology and any two subjects from the following: Chemistry, Physics, Geography, Economics and Agricultural Science.

3 Year Degree programme through Direct Entry: Candidate must have minimum of merit pass in Biology, and Education at NCE level and 5 0’ level credit pass which must include Biology, Mathematics, any one Science subjects and English Language.

(I) IJMB 7 points with a minimum of C grade in Biology plus 5 credits ‘0’ level requirements.

(ii) NCE with less than merit pass in Biology and Education with 5 credits ‘0’ level requirements and at least 2 years teaching experience.

Structure of the Programme

The B. Sc. (Ed) Biology programme of the Department of Science Education are: 4-year Degree programme for UME candidates who start as 100 level and 3-year programme for Direct Entry candidates whojoin at 200 level. Thus, the duration of the programmes in the department is a minimum of six (6) semesters for Direct entry candidates and a minimum of eight (8) semesters for candidates on 4 year degree programmes.

B.sc Ed Computer Science Education

Computer Science Education Programme is a commitment to producing high quality and professionally competent computer science teachers trained with adequate skills, new orientation and knowledge to meet global best practices in education. Graduates in this programme would be endowed with academic and professional competencies attitudes and values needed for quantitative, qualitative, effective and productive teaching in schools and perform well in other fields where computer skills are required.

The Computer Science Education programme shall be known for excellence in teacher education and computer science that harnesses the capabilities and capacities of student teachers through new orientation on productivily, service, and self reliance for effective utilization in school settings and the larger society. Hence, students would be provided with an enabling, friendly, conducive and encouraging environment for quality training and excellent computer skills development in a variety of relevant educational activities for self, state and national development.

Objectives

The specific objectives of the programmes are to provide:

  1. Advanced knowledge in Computer Science and sufficient background knowledge of the secondary school and Computer Science.
  2. Pedagogical content knowledge competencies and skills for effective teaching of Computer Science and promotion of quality learning outcomes in schools.
  3. Intellectual and professional skills and abilities to perform the expected roles of a Computer Science teacher in schools and related fields.
  4. Training that promotes c9nfidence, creativity and commitment to teaching and teaching profession.

B.Sc. Ed Geography

Objectives

The objectives of the BSc Ed Geography programme are derivable from the objectives of Teacher Education as contaiped in National Policy on Education (2004) as follows:

(1) To encourage the spirit of enquiry and creativity in students as prospective Geography teachers.

(ii) To provide training through the study of science and science education that will help produce Geography teachers who will fit into the social life of the community and society at large and to enhance their commitments to national objectives.

(iii) To provide pre-service and in-service Geography teachers the intellectual and professional background adequate for their assignments and to make them adaptable to any changing situations

(iv)To build the pre-service and in-service Geography science teachers’ commitment to the teaching profession.

Specifically, the B.Sc Ed Geography programmes of IBB University will enable students who have successfully complete the programme acquire;

  1. advanced knowledge of the subjectmatter ofthe Geography discipline
  2. sound knowledge of the pedagogical content knowledge and competences for effective instructional practices and quality learning outcomes.
  3. professional skills and abilities for performing the different roles and functions of a Geography teacher in schools and in the larger society.

  5. adequate background knowledge for higher studies in various aspect of Geography education.
  6. knowledge, skills and competencies to teach Geography at secondary and college of education levels including polytechnics.

B.Sc. Ed Mathematics

The B.Sc. (Ed) Mathematics programme is designed to provide a sound pre-service teacher education aimed at providing highly qualified much needed Mathematics teachers who are equipped with intellectual and professional competencies, skills and values that will make them effectively function in the classroom and other fields of educational related context where the knowledge and skills in Mathematicsare required.

Mission

The mission is to provide opportunities for high quality teacher education in mathematics using high-tech teaching facilities in an ideal teaching-learning environment that will facilitate best practices in teaching and research for effective training of mathematics teachers.

Vision

In the context of the vision of the department of Mathematics Education programme aspires to provide excellence in producing professionally competent Mathematics teachers needed for the nation educational system.

Objectives

The specific objectives of the programmes are to provide:

  1. Advanced knowledge in Mathematics and sufficient background knowledge of the secondary school Mathematics.
  2. Pedagogical content knowledge competencies and skills for effective teaching of Mathematics and promotion of quality learning outcomes in schools.
  3. Intellectual and professional skills and abilities to perform the expected roles of a Mathematics and Computer Science teacher in schools and related fields.
  4. Training that promotes confidence, creativity and commitment to teaching and teaching profession.
Admission Requirements

(i) 5 credit passes at ‘0’ level which must include Mathematics, English Language and any Science subject for UME candidates.

(ii) LIMB with a minimum of C-grade in Mathematics in addition to 5 credit passes ‘0’ level requirements which must include Mathematics and English Language for Direct Admission to 200 level.

(iii) NCE with a minimum of C-grade in Mathematics and Education in addition to 5 credits ‘0’ level requirements Which must include Mathematics and English Language for Direct Admission to 200 level. A pass-grade in ‘0’ level English Language MAY be accepted in consideration forNCE pass in communication skill.

(iv) Diploma with a minimum of C-grade in Mathematics/Mathematics Education from recognised tertiary institution in addition to 5 credits ‘0’ level requirement for Direct Admission to 200 level.
