The National Universities Commission (NUC) accreditation teams have commenced the evaluation of academic programmes at Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University (IBBU), Lapai, with an assurance that the process will be objective and improvement-driven.
Speaking during a courtesy visit to the Vice Chancellor at the Abdulkadir Kure Senate Chamber, the Team Leader, Professor Lateef Babatunde Ayeleru, a Professor of European Studies from the University of Ibadan, said the exercise was aimed at strengthening standards across Nigerian universities.
“This is not a witchhunt. We are part of the system and we understand the challenges. Our duty is to exchange ideas, assess progress and recommend areas that require attention,” he said.
The programmes scheduled for evaluation are in the Faculties of Agriculture, Applied Science and Technology, and Languages and Communication Studies. The Departments are Geology, Agricultural Economics and Extension Services, Crop Production, Animal Production, Islamic Studies and French.
In his response, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Mohammed Hadi Sulaiman, expressed optimism that the assessment would improve the University’s academic delivery.
He noted that the Institution faces funding pressures following the creation of two additional state-owned universities.
“Our resources, which previously came to a single institution, are now spread among three universities. But we remain committed to meeting quality standards,” he said.
Professor Sulaiman added that the visiting accreditation teams were the first official guests to be hosted in the newly commissioned Senate Building, which was inaugurated nine days earlier.
The Registrar, Alhjai Idris Sale Kusherki, pledged full cooperation from the Management, Deans and Heads of Departments to ensure a smooth process.
After the meeting, the accreditation teams proceeded to inspect key facilities, including the Central library and Professorial complex, before continuing engagements with the various departments.
