Department of Counselling Psychology

History of the Department

The Department of Education and Counselling Psychology started in October, 2006 as part of the four foundation Departments in the Faculty of Education and Arts, Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai, Niger State, Nigeria. The Department started with four lecturers and ten students. But presently, the Department has ten Lecturers and one hundred and six students. Although the Department was designed to run programmes in education and Counselling, it is currently running only a programme — B. Ed (Counselling Psychology).

philosophy

The philosophy of the Department is to produce highly skilled, creative and innovative world class counselling psychologists that would provide quality counselling intervention to human beings in variety of settings through creative research, in-depth analysis of human behaviours personality growth and development so as to facilitate positive change in the society.

objectives

The above stated philosophy will be attained through the following specific objectives of the Department:

  • To produce students of high academic standard in Counselling, career services and Community related areas.
  • To produce highly motivated and efficiently skilled counselling psychologists for schools, non-governmental organizations, hospitals and other spheres in Niger State and beyond
  • To offer Counselling services to the immediate environment
  • To encourage the spirit of inquiry and creativity among lecturers and students
  • To produce counselling Psychologists teachers with intellectual and professional skills.

Admission Requirements

Candidates for admission into the B. Ed Counselling Psychology degree programme must satisfy the IBB University’s minimum entry qualifications, which stipulate 5 credits including English Language and Mathematics in GCE/SSCE 0 Level, NECO/WAEC (at not more than two sittings).

UTME

Candidates seeking admission through JAMB (UME) into the 4-year B.Ed Counselling Psychology programme must satisfy the general requirements for admission into IBB University, Lapai . In addition, they must have at least credit passes in any other three Arts, Social Sciences or Sciences subjects. Candidates’ results in these three major subject areas (Arts, Social sciences and sciences) will be used in placing them in different teaching subject areas. Also candidates must write the JAMB examination iii four subjects which must include the Use of English, a subject in the Arts, social science or sciences and any other two subjects.
