Philosophy and objectives

The undergraduate programme in Geology & Mining at the Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University is designed primarily to provide students with the basic requirements needed by a professional geologist in any of the fields in which geologists and mining engineers are required in a rapidly developing country like Nigeria. With this objective, the student is taught to some depth the more conventional and applied aspects of geology such as Hydrogeology, Applied Geophysics, Applied Geochemistry, Engineering Geology, Mining Geology, Mineral Processing, Petroleum Geology, etc. This will facilitate further specialization in any of the professional fields in which the student may choose to work in later years, largely in mining and oil companies, water supply agencies, construction companies. international organizations (UNDP, UNICEF, UNIDO, UNESCO. lEA. etc), public service (Federal and State Ministries responsible for Solid Minerals Development, Petroleum, Water Resources, Agriculture, Works and Housing) geological survey agencies at home and abroad, steel raw materials exploration agencies, space research and development agencies, metallurgical development organizations, self-sustained ownership of mineral buying centres, self-employment as artisanal and small- scale mining operators, consultancy, and in teaching and other research institution.

Explanatory Notes

Focus for now is at the 100 Level: Geology 1 and Geology 2 (new nomenclatures and new course contents).

Next year, the Department will adopt the CCMAS courses for 100 and 200 Levels and will add 30% other courses. By the time the current 100 Level students reach the 300 Level, SIWES will cease to operate in the 2nd Semester but only during the long vacation. At that time 300 Level will have 1st and 2nd Semesters

At the 100 Level, course names and contents in Mathematics, Computer Science, Biology, Chemistry and Physics may have also been re-designated. 100 Level students will see these as recorded online in the different departments and select accordingly.

Any carry-over examination at the 100 Level will be set on basis of BMAS and not CCMAS.
