NIGERIA’S PROSPERITY IN 2050: IBBUL LEADS NUC PROJECT

The National Universities Commission (NUC) has commissioned Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai to lead the development of sectoral component of the blueprint for Nigeria’s prosperity in 2050 with a view to providing solutions to its challenges.

 The Vice Chancellor, Professor Muhammad Nasir Maiturare made this known while giving his remarks at a One-day Research Retreat on Nigeria’s Prosperity in 2050 Blueprint, Africa Centres of Excellence and NNPC Renewable Energy Collaboration Proposals Development organised by the University’s Centre for Applied Sciences and Technology Research (CASTER),held at the main campus.

 He said that the choice of IBB University by NUC to lead the project was in recognition of its national and global reputation in research and scholarly achievements in various sectoral areas.

 Professor Maiturare commended various research teams that were selected by the University to undertake the assignment for their efforts and commitment to the task; urging them to bring their scholarly talents to bear so that the privilege given to the University on the NUC legacy project and other projects on Renewable Energy Collaboration with NNPC and Africa Centres of Excellence on Shea Value-chain and Environmental Sustainability Research as well as Energy-Mix Research and Development would be justified.

 The Vice Chancellor also appreciated the NUC for having confidence in the University to participate in the national project of a blueprint for developing Science, Technology and Innovations (STI) in Nigeria of 2050 and assured of quality position paper that would provide positive solutions to the expected population expansion

 Earlier in his address, the University’s Director, Centre for Applied Sciences and Technology Research , Professor Nuhu Obaje, stated that the retreat was organised to collate interim reports of research teams that had been tasked on the NUC project and to develop action plan on other research projects.

 He assured that IBB University has the requisite intellectual capacity to develop a blueprint that could effectively manage the expected nation’s population by 2050 and the likely threats and opportunities that could accompany it.

 Professor Obaje who has been coordinating various high-impact research projects in the University reaffirmed the determination of research teams to ensure innovations and timely results from the study efforts being undertaken for the socio-economic development of the nation.

 Highlights of the retreat were presentation of interim reports by various research teams on NUC Blueprint project and development of action-plans on Africa Centres of Excellence research opportunities as well as NNPC renewable energy collaboration proposal.

 The Blueprint development teams were on Renewable Energy led by Dr. Dickson Musa Achinmugu of Biochemistry Department, Mining and Industrialisation led by Dr. Stephen Agwuncha of Chemistry Department; and Water Resources led by Dr. Samuel Ibrahim of Geography Department.

Others are Agriculture-Biotechnology and Food Security led by Dr. Alimi Folorunso Lawal of Faculty of Agriculture; and Education and ICT was led by Professor (Mrs) Rosemary Igbo while Professor Nuhu Obaje led the team on Conventional Energy.

IBBUL SUG BEST IN NIGERIA

Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai’s Students Union Government(SUG) has emerged the best in Nigeria at the third edition of Students’ Leaders Development Training and Tournament (SLEDT) held at Youth Development Centre, Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library, Abeokuta, Ogun State.

The University’s Contingent to the tournament lifted the most coveted trophy in a best practice sharing tournament on the theme: “Raising Responsible and Responsive Students Leaders for Institutional and National Development” keenly contested by many high ranking universities in the country with very few making it to the final round.

 Receiving the team in his Office, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Muhammad Nasir Maiturare commended the outstanding performance of the Students at the tournament; pointing out that the feat would certainly improve the profile of the University and its recognition at the international level.

 He also lauded the organisers of the students’ leaders development training and tournament for initiating a veritable platform that would give the students relevant training and experience that could transform them to greater leaders.

 Professor Maiturare reiterated his commitment for a sustained support that would make students of IBB University compete favourably with their peers on the globe.

 While presenting the Team to the Management, the Dean, Student Affairs, Dr. Ishaq Alhaji Aliyu Ma’ali said that the team demonstrated high level scholarly prowess to defeat four other universities that made it to the finals of the tournament; carting home three awards of Most Productive, Most Accountable, Most Sustainability conscious and Most Continuity conscious Students Union Government in Nigeria.

 He said the feat has given the best winner of the tournament the opportunity to enjoy full sponsorship to attend the International Students Development and Training Conference in Czechoslovakia Republic by August, 2018.

 Dr. Ma’ali disclosed that IBB University team displayed skilful intellectual ability on variety of students’ oriented projects, initiatives to boost Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) and peaceful bold steps taken to resolve some challenging issues in the University and building a cordial working relationship with the University Management.

 The Dean stated that at the tournament, participants showcased their competencies and achievement based on seven cardinal benchmarks of vision, continuity, accountability, agric-business, peace, productivity and sustainability plans by Students Union leaders in the Ivory Towers in the Country; adding that seasoned panel of judges were drawn from different reputable professional backgrounds that assessed the performance of the participants.

 He appreciated the support and harmonious relationship students of the Institution were enjoying from the Management and called for a sustained effort.

 It would be recalled that IBB University won the 2nd runners up at the second edition of the tournament hosted by the premier University, University of Ibadan in 2016.

 Five other universities that competed at the finals were University of Benin, Imo State University, Owerri, IBB University, Lapai, Federal University, Wukari and Federal University of Agriculture, Makurdi who emerged runner up.

PHINNX MICROSYSTEMS TRAINS IBBUL STAFF, STUDENTS ON E-LEARNING

Pursuant to the realisation of ensuring that every member of the University becomes ICT compliant in no distant time, the Management of the Institution has collaborated with Phinnx Microsystems Innovation Ltd on e-learning training workshop for staff and students.
Speaking at the closing ceremony of one week intensive e-learning training workshop organised for academic staff and students, held in the e-library of the Institution, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Muhammad Nasir Maiturare reaffirmed his determination to have a paradigm shift from the conventional class-room lecture practice of teaching and learning to e-learning method.
He underscored the role of ICT in facilitating development process of every organisation and stressed that concerted efforts would be made to make most of procedures in the University paperless in order to stand at better ranking pedestal with other citadels of learning on the globe.
Professor Maiturare who spoke through the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), Professor Abu-Kassim Adamu charged the beneficiaries of the training programme to make good use of the opportunity to become more ICT proficient.
He assured that the Management was ready to continue with similar trainings for other members of the University and appreciated Messrs Phinnx Microsystems Innovation Ltd for partnering with the Institution on e-learning technique.
Also in his remarks at the occasion, the Director ICT/MIS, Professor Baba Alfa disclosed that the e-learning programme was to facilitate the computerisation of all aspects of teaching and learning activities in the University and to inter connect IBB University with other Universities already on the e-learning platform.
He stated that IBB University was fortunate to be among very first few universities in the country to key-in into the e-learning; pointing out that over 5,000 members of the University have benefitted from the training programme and assured that other staff members and students would also benefit from the programme.
Profess Alfa thanked Phinnx Microsystems Ltd for choosing IBB University on e-learning collaboration and providing proxy and access facilities to enhance internet services in the Institution.
Earlier, the Chief Executive Officer, Messer Phinnx Microsystems Innovation Ltd, Mr. Oguntade Temitope said the firm was determined to explore other areas of possible collaborations that would enhance the development drive of the University.
He encouraged the participants to utilise the knowledge acquired from the workshop to develop their teaching and learning activities in the University and appreciated the Management for the opportunity to contribute its quota to the growth and development of IBB University.

IBBUL PARTNERS PRIVATE FIRM ON ALTERNATIVE POWER SUPPLY

The Management of Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai has reiterated its readiness to partner with reputable firms that could provide alternative stable power supply to the Institution so as to alleviate incessant power challenge.
The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Muhammad Nasir Maiturare made this known while speaking at a presentation on renewable energy by Messer Asteven Group of Renewable Energy Solutions in the Senate Chamber of the University.
He pointed out that efficient power supply is critical to effective teaching, learning and research activities of the University, hence the need to collaborate with reputable organisations that have the requisite capacity to provide stable and affordable alternative power supply to the Institution.
Professor Maiturare disclosed that several efforts have been made by the Management to mitigate the problem of stable power supply to the University but none had yielded any positive result and assured that the Management was ready to provide enabling environment for interested firms that would like to collaborate with the Institution on finding lasting solution to the menace.
Earlier in his presentation, the Franchise Partner, Asteven Group of Renewable Energy Solutions, Alhaji Abdullahi Suleiman said that power challenge has for some years become a major issue in Nigeria and was adversely affecting her desired economic development; stressing that there was the need for multifaceted approach by relevant stakeholders to urgently address the problem.
He also pointed out the problem of unstable power supply was seriously impeding the efficient academic operations of tertiary institutions in the Country and called for an alternative solution, which he said, the Asteven Group was ready to provide for the University in modular basis.
Alhaji Suleiman assured that the firm has high standard technology and professional staff that could provide reliable solar energy to the University so as to complement its other sources of power and thanked the Management for
indicating interest to partner with the Asteven group on intervening in the power challenge of the Institution.

NNPC TO STRENGTHEN PARTNERSHIP WITH IBBUL ON BIDA-SOKOTO BASINS, RENEWABLE ENERGY

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) is looking into the possibility of upgrading the findings of Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai in respect of the research on oil and gas exploration in the Bida and Sokoto basins.

The Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, Dr. Maikanti Kachalla Baru made this known when a team from IBB University led by the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council, Dr. Mohammed K. Santuraki paid him a courtesy visit in his office on Tuesday.

Dr. Baru said the Corporation was delighted with the report as submitted by the University and that having successfully completed the first assignment, it is natural that the second segment begun. He maintained that the advantage of working with an institution like IBB University was the development of home based capacity for utilization.

He stressed that a lot of speculations which were riped on the Bida Basin have now been put to rest with the research by the formidable team from IBBU, adding that usually, where the expertise are available, the closest higher institution of learning is used for the study.

The Group Managing Director congratulated IBB University for starting research on renewable energies and promised the continued support and cooperation of the Corporation to the University.

Speaking earlier, the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council, Dr. Mohammed K. Santuraki said the team was on the visit to express gratitude to the Corporation for the oppurtunity to undertake the research on the Bida and Sokoto basins.

He said being a relatively new university, IBB University chose two areas of research, namely, agriculture and mineral and oil exploration, which have so far been developed.

The Council Chairman further disclosed that a team from the University has gone to train farmers in Uganda on organic agriculture, adding that the Raw Material Research and Development Council has engaged the University on the characterisation of mineral deposits in Niger State.

Also speaking, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Muhammad Nasir Maiturare said that the visit to the Corporation was to thank the Management of NNPC and to further seek for more areas of co-operation.

He sought for the collaboration of the Corporation in strengthening the geological programme at the University stressing that the institution has keyed into the Federal Government’s technological agenda and wished to sustain it.

The Vice Chancellor, on behalf of the staff and students of IBBUL requested from the NNPC, a befitting geological laboratory and a field vehicle for staff and students’ field studies.

On the team for the visit included the Director, Research Centre, Professor George Nuhu Obaje; University Bursar, Malam Abdul Garba; Directors of Academic Planning and Consultancy Services, Dr. Mohammed Aliyu Paiko and Mallam Suleiman Liman.

IBBUL ENTERS PARTNERSHIP WITH EGYPTIAN AND RWANDAN GOVERNMENTS

The Egyptian and Rwandan embassies have promised to assist Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai in the area of medical expertise,  exchange of students and staff in agriculture, ICT and renewable energy.

This was made known when a team from the University, led by the Vice Chancellor, Professor Muhammad Nasir Maiturare visited the two embasies in Abuja to discuss modalities for partnerships and exchange of best practices between IBBUL and selected universities in the two countries.

Discussion with the Egyptian Ambassador to Nigeria was on modalities to assist IBBUL get the School of Medical Sciences to start on a very sound footing.

The Ambassador, His Excellency, Mr. Ashraf Salama promised to link the University with professional medical practitioners who already have much working experience in Nigeria.

He also assured the Vice Chancellor that he would assist with teaching and learning materials for the Arabic and French Languages proficiency courses that the university is currently offering  its staff.

Other program promised by the Ambassador is the  offer of special slots for IBBUL in their annual capacity building courses for staff as offered annually in Egypt. Egypt is known for her robust, internationally recognised and respected medical experts.

Similarly, discussions with the Rwandan Embacy were focused on students and staff exchanges in the areas of Agriculture, ICT and renewable energy.

The Ambassador, His Excellency, Mr. Satnislas Kamanzi promised to provide a link to the University of Rwanda for the discussions to be formalised on an institution level.

He assured the Vice Chancellor of his readiness to influence  the discussions  also at the national level.
